Overview

  • In recent years, with the advancement of technology, the price and accuracy of electronic scales have been greatly improved, thus promoting their widespread use. While there are several types of digital scales, the most common are based on strain gauge technology. This is due to their high precision and low manufacturing cost.

Scales using strain gauge load cells work on the principle of resistance. To understand resistance, electricity can often be thought of as water flowing through a hose. As water flows through the hose, the flow can be restricted in a number of ways, such as by squeezing the hose in one place. In a similar manner, the flow of current in a circuit can be restricted by reducing the width of the wire. One way to reduce the width of the wire is to stretch it like a rubber band.

Strain gauges consist of a wire arranged in a zigzag pattern that allows the wire to be stretched or compressed at multiple locations along its length, maximizing the amount of deflection. The current flowing through the load cell increases and decreases as the strain gauge stretches and compresses. Stress can be measured by reading the input and output voltages of the strain gauge circuit. Strain gauges are used in many applications to measure the stress experienced by materials during use, such as aircraft skins in aerodynamic testing.

In a strain gauge load cell, a strain gauge is placed along a length of metal, forming a sort of spring like a springboard. The spring body of a load cell usually has holes cut into the side to intentionally weaken the spring and concentrate the strain to a specific point. Strain gauges are placed directly over these weak points to measure the maximum strain.

The platform of the scale is installed on the load-receiving end of the load cell, while the other end is fixed on the base of the scale. As weight is added to the platform, the load cell flexes like a diving board and someone stands on the edge. This in turn causes the strain gauge to stretch and compress at the weak point, changing the resistance in the load cell circuit. Even at maximum capacity, the change in voltage is so small that amplification is required for measurement.
