About Voyages to Antiquity
Voyages to Antiquity's single mid-size ship, the Aegean Odyssey offers cruise itineraries to the sites and archeological treasures that remain from some of the world's greatest civilizations.
The Odyssey is an older vessel that began life as a car ferry; it has been tastefully reconstructed to create a sophisticated but casual ambiance with upgraded staterooms and public areas. There is no onboard glitz whatsoever; the decor is meant to relax rather than to impress.
Accommodations are fairly spacious, as the most recent renovations reduced the number of staterooms; some were reconfigured to create balconies. New outside cabins have been created, to accommodate the demand for premium staterooms.
What sets the Odyssey apart is that its itineraries feature the great ancient civilizations of Egypt, Greece and Rome. In recent years, unrest in the Middle East prompted the addition of itineraries designed to explore the cultures of Asia.
Voyages to Antiquity is best for:
Adults with an interest in culture and history rather than the usual cruise activities;
Those looking for an enriching cruise vacation on a smaller ship.
The atmosphere and experience onboard Voyages to Antiquity:
Voyages to Antiquity offers a rich program of shore excursions, activities and celebrated guest speaker designed to bring to life the history, culture and sites of the ancient world. Because the cruise experience is educational, it tends to attract like-minded guests who have a real interest in the sites visited during the cruise, as well as an emphasis on enrichment (as opposed to "entertainment.") Adding to the sense of place, regional specialties are offered throughout the cruise.
During the day, country-club-casual wear prevails; in the evening, most passengers choose somewhat dressier clothing. The formal dining room requires long pants and shirts with collars for men and skirts or trousers (not jeans) for women. There are no formal nights.
Cruise price includes airport transfers prior to the cruise and after; wine or beer or soft drinks with dinner; most shore excursions and onboard gratuities. For longer itineraries, the line may offer a package that includes overnight accommodations on land.
The clientele of Voyages to Antiquity:
Passengers are generally 50+ and older, well-traveled, well-educated who have a keen interest in exploring the history and culture of ancient civilizations. Many are return guests. As the line markets to the U.S., the U.K, Canada and Australia, most are English-speaking; minimal announcements are made in English.
Regarding children onboard Voyages to Antiquity: Their specialized cruise programs are destination-focused and designed for adults. There are no facilities for children onboard. The line considers the cruises unsuitable for children under the age of twelve.
