"The district and the faculty were really interested in the movie game club thriving, since it had been one of the only ways kids could interact with each other socially."

A current craze for the game"Among Us," an online multiplayer competition, brought Velazquez and many others into the club. Before COVID-19,'' Wood said, the movie game team had fewer than 10 members. Now about 60 pupils have combined the group's conversation channel.

This year, the club dove into the competitive side of gambling, challenging high schoolers from Washington and throughout the nation in an assortment of esports. Wood explained the club's"Super Smash Bros." team is nearing the playoffs in the state competition and stays undefeated.

"I believe there are more people like Jair at your ordinary school than you would think," Wood explained. "People that are mad good at a video game, they simply have not had a socket to get it anything more than arbitrary matchmaking online." After moving to Lake Stevens at the fall of 2019, Velazquez didn't have much time in college before doors were shuttered from the spring. Velazquez said he made friends in the video game club that he has not yet met in person. Still, the students hype each other up during every contest.
