How Cotton Fabric Is Made

Cotton is a natural fiber that comes from plants. Cotton is mainly composed of cellulose, which makes it a soft and fluffy material. The cultivation and processing of this natural resource are used to transform it into textiles known for their versatility, performance, and natural comfort. Cotton is widely used in many industries and accounts for half of the fiber worn in the world. Cotton production has evolved over the decades and today produces 29 million tons of cotton per year!

Studies have shown that cotton was first cultivated in the Indus Delta, dating back to the fifth millennium BC. Today, more than 100 countries are involved in cotton production. Cotton plants grow in warm climates in more than 20 countries around the world. The largest planting bases are located in China, India, the USA, Pakistan, Brazil, Uzbekistan, Australia, Turkey, Greece, and Egypt. The largest producer in the world is China, where farmers harvest 4.6 million tons of fiber each year, according to the Environmental Justice Foundation report.

Cotton fabric producers extract this textile from the protective shell of fibers that surround the cottonseed, known as the boll. While the cotton seeds themselves are small, the bolls that encase them can be larger than the end of your thumb. To make cotton fabric, producers must first separate the cottonseed from the bolls. In the past, this step was done manually, and today, automated forms of cotton gins exist to make the process easier for human workers. Machines can harvest bolls from fields, and other machines can then separate the seeds from the bolls.

Cotton is a soft, absorbent, and breathable natural fiber ideal for clothing. The material has good thermal conductivity, making the body warm in winter and cool in summer. Textiles are not very flexible and tend to wrinkle after the first wash. Plus, it's non-allergenic and produced without chemicals under optimal conditions, making organic cotton products the best choice for your skin and our community.
